Essential Oils

What’s the big deal with essential oils?

Essential oils have seemingly been all the rage the past few years. So what exactly are they?

Essential oils are the “essence” of plants. They are naturally occuring, volatile aromatic compounds that can be found in different parts of plants, such as seeds, stems, leaves, etc. The word “volatile” is used to describe them because of how quickly they change states of matter.

Because of the quick change from liquid to gas, essential oils are often used in aromatherapy to help with a variety of health issues.

How to use essential oils

There are three different ways to use essential oils—aromatically, topically, and internally.

Most commonly, essential oils are breathed in through the nose. They then head to the limbic system, a part of the brain that supports many bodily functions such as sense of smell, memory, emotions, and behavior.

Diffusers, cotton balls, spray bottles (filled with a water/oil mixture), and in the laundry are just a few ways to aromatically experience essential oils.

Essential oils can also be applied topically to the skin. They are easily absorbed into the skin, so much so, that the first time or two, you may want to add a carrier oil (like coconut oil) to dilute it.

Popular places for essential oils include the neck, forehead, temples, chest, arms, and bottom of the feet.

Finally, essential oils may be ingested, either as a dietary supplement or as a simple seasoning replacement for your food.

Different oils affect different parts of the body, so it’s important to pick the right one for what you are trying to accomplish.

With any of these methods of use, it is important to get a pure product. Unfortunately the industry standard of testing required to label an oil as 100% pure therapeutic, gas chromatography, is not sensitive or specific enough to ensure a pure, undiluted, therapeutic product. We recommend dōTERRA because they do mass spectrometry testing on every batch twice, which does ensure purity, potency, and therapeutic abilities.
