What is yoga?

Yoga is a physical and meditational practice that began in ancient India a few millennia ago. While commonly thought of as a religious practice, the discipline promotes benefits for the mind, body and spirit.

There are many different yoga practices, but the most common of are Hatha and Raja yoga. Hatha is most typically practiced in the United States.

Through a variety of postures, stances, stretches, breathing exercises, and meditation, yoga improves the body and spirit with strength, flexibility, and balance.

The benefits of yoga

Yoga is the sixth most practiced form of exercise in the United States. Its health benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • Relief of chronic lower back pain
  • Decrease of pain in neck
  • Reduction of stress/depression
  • Improvement of mental health, such as anxiety
  • Enhancement of overall general health

The effects of yoga transcend most health practices as it improves the mind, the body, and the spirit.

Who should practice yoga?

Yoga can be practiced by anyone who is in relatively good health. From children to seniors, people are practicing yoga in the millions. If you are looking to reduce pain, increase balance, and/or add focus and positivity to your mind, yoga is right for you.

Yoga can be practiced at many different levels. If you are just beginning, feel free to ask your instructor for a modified pose suited to your level of difficulty.

Elizabeth Smith graduated from Clemson University, and after a few years in the business world and then as a stay-at-home mom, she decided to transform her passion for yoga into her career. In May 2017, Elizabeth received her 200 hour registered yoga teaching certification from Namaste Yoga in Irmo, SC.

Elizabeth’s goal is to make yoga accessible for anyone willing to practice. She encourages her students to find strength and presence, both on and off the mat.
